Curse This Ocean: Lightbringer
15/01/13 || Averatu
These guys have been compared to Cult of Luna all over the show. They label themselves as noisy/blackened hardcore. “Lightbringer” is comprised of fast to mid tempo songs with some down-tempo moments, I’m not driven to drink listening to it, as when I listen to the album “Cult of luna” for instance. To my frame of reference, this resembles a lot of stuff that happened in 90’s alternative punk/gtind/grunge crossover movement that I would not call post-rock (besides for the vocals), but then everyone has to hang their hat somewhere. Yet they’ve been able to add a twist that makes this more than another faceless post-rock act.
Curse this Ocean are somehow from Italy and Germany, and they fall in the usual delicious Engrish trap, some of the lyrics sound very awkward, like a badly translated Kung Fu film (noodles), and although I can certainly appreciate what they are doing, I think most English speaking listeners might tune out.
The good news is this is a pretty decent listen that has actually grown on me. This looks like a young band and if they can keep it together I think they have huge potential.
7/10: Matches?
After going thru that crap, you most likely wanna read something way more interesting. You do, admit it.
